Reflections on a Mote of Dust

On September 11, 2001, coordinated acts of terrorism were carried out against the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and against four U. S. civil air liners.

In this time of shock and grief, I think it is appropriate to contemplate the words of Dr. Carl Sagan as given in a commencement address delivered May 11, 1996.

The cameras of Voyager 1 on February 14, 1990, pointed back toward the Sun and took a series of pictures of the Sun and the planets, making the first ever "portrait" of our solar system as seen from the outside. Dr. Sagan was referring to the image of Earth.    - Ray Shapp
