Mars: August 16 and 18, 2003

Clif says, "Here's my latest two Mars pictures. Note in the one taken this morning, the three Tharsis ridge volcanoes are made visible by clouds at their tops (three white spots on a diagonal below Solis Lacus), as well as Olympus Mons. In the latter case, I think we are actually seeing the big volcano itself, not clouds, because of the light beige color. It would be white if it were just clouds. Lots of real detail around Solis Lacus. Each of those "spokes" in the "wheel" around Solis Lacus is a named canal. All the place names ending in "Lacus" were connected by canals in the old style albedo maps. Neither the lakes nor the canals seem to have any topographical reality. They sure show up as albedo variations, though. It is going to be very interesting to find out what the basis for these things is. Latest theory is that they are just dark underlying rocks covered by lighter dust which seasonally blows away, giving rise to the old "wave of darkening" originally thought to be a bloom of vegetation caused by the melting polar cap".
